808nm wavelength Diode laser hair removal penetrates into the dermis, and is absorbed by the targeted melanin in the hair follicles. This will form enough thermal energy to destroy the targeted follicular epithelium because of the laser-induced photothermal effect. In contrast, the surrounding skin tissue is spared due to lack of mela- nin. Pulse duration is a key parameter of laser hair removal equipment, which directly affects the treatment effect and safety.
1. Definition
- Pulse duration refers to the duration of each laser energy emission, usually in milliseconds (ms).
- It determines the speed of energy transfer to the hair follicles and surrounding skin, affecting the distribution of heat in the target tissue.
2. Principle of action
- Laser hair removal is based on selective photothermolysis, that is, laser energy is absorbed by melanin in the hair follicles and converted into heat to destroy the hair follicles while minimizing damage to the surrounding skin.
- The pulse duration needs to match the thermal relaxation time (TRT) of the hair follicles:
- The TRT of the hair follicles is usually between 10-100 ms, depending on the thickness of the hair and the skin type.
- TRT is the time it takes for the tissue to dissipate heat after absorbing heat. Pulse times that are too long or too short will affect the effect or safety.
3. Range and selection of pulse duration
- Short pulse (3-10 ms):
- Suitable for light skin (Fitzpatrick I-III) and fine hair.
- Short pulse delivers energy quickly and is suitable for smaller targets (such as fine hair) because the TRT of fine hair is shorter.
- Advantages: precise destruction of hair follicles, suitable for hair with high melanin absorption.
- Disadvantages: may increase the risk of epidermal damage for dark skin because the energy is concentrated and the heat dissipation time is short.
- Medium-long pulse (10-50 ms):
- Suitable for most skin types and medium-thick hair.
- Balances effect and safety, widely used in professional equipment (such as diode laser or Alexander laser).
- Long pulse (50-100 ms or longer):
- Suitable for dark skin (Fitzpatrick IV-VI) or thick hair.
- Slow energy delivery allows more time for the skin to dissipate heat, reducing the risk of burns or pigmentation.
- Commonly used for Nd:YAG laser (1064 nm) because of its deep penetration and low absorption of melanin.
